Rupert, founded in 1906, sprang up after the announcement of the [[Minidoka Project|Minidoka Reclamation Project]], which provided irrigation and electricity following the completion of the [[Minidoka Dam]] on the [[Snake River]] in 1906. After the dam was built, Rupert became one of the first cities in the world to have its streets lit by electricity.{{Citation needed|date=February 2023}}

==Geography==
Rupert is located in southern Minidoka County at an [[elevation]] of {{convert|4157|ft|m|0}} [[AMSL|above sea level]].<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is part of the agricultural region of the [[Snake River Plain]] known as [[Magic Valley]], and is {{convert|3|mi|0}} northwest of the [[Snake River]]. [[Interstate 84 in Idaho|Interstate 84]] passes {{convert|5|mi|0}} to the south, and before its construction, [[U.S. Route 30]] passed through Rupert. [[Acequia, Idaho|Acequia]] lies about {{convert|5|mi|0}} northeast of Rupert and [[Jackson, Idaho|Jackson]] is about {{convert|4|mi|0}} east of Rupert on the Snake River of [[Minidoka County, Idaho|Minidoka County]] and [[Cassia County, Idaho|Cassia County]] of Idaho and [[Paul, Idaho|Paul]] is about the same distance to the west.

The racial makeup of the city was 75.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.3% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.6% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.4% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 20.1% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 2.6% from two or more races.
