Some of the earliest settlers of the Rosiclare area were outlaws mainly counterfeiters from the [[Sturdivant Gang]] in the late 1810s-early 1820s. [[Illinois Route 34]] terminates in Rosiclare at the river and leads north {{convert|30|mi}} to [[Harrisburg, Illinois|Harrisburg]]. The next Illinois community upriver (northeast) is [[Elizabethtown, Illinois|Elizabethtown]], {{convert|4.5|mi}} via IL-34 and [[Illinois Route 146|IL-146]] or {{convert|2.5|mi}} by river, while the next one downstream (southwest) is [[Golconda, Illinois|Golconda]], {{convert|15|mi}} via IL-146 or {{convert|11|mi}} by river.
