As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,971 people, 744 households, and 552 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|1,183.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 781 housing units at an average density of {{convert|469.1|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 97.21% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.71% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.05% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.56% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.76% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.71% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.57% of the population.

There were 744 households, out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,488, and the median income for a family was $47,935. Males had a median income of $31,763 versus $23,304 for females. Rockwell Elementary School, formerly known as Rockwell School, was built in 1928.  It combined a total of eighteen one and two room school houses within the eastern part of Rowan County.  Until 1959, Rockwell School housed grades 1-12.  Beginning in 1959, Rockwell housed grades 1–6.  In 1973, Kindergarten was added and made Rockwell a K-6 school.  In 1990, Rowan County changed all of the elementary schools to K-5 and this configuration is still in place today.
