The population was 724 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]]. It is part of the rural [[Gallia County, Ohio|Point Pleasant micropolitan area]]. Although the town is named after the [[Rio Grande|river]] in the southern United States, its name is pronounced "Rye-O Grand" rather than the traditional [[Spanish language|Spanish]] pronunciation.

Rio Grande is home to the [[University of Rio Grande]]/[[Rio Grande Community College]]  It is also the original location of [[Bob Evans Restaurants]].  The restaurant chain began as a single [[truck stop]] [[diner]] in Rio Grande.

==History==
Rio Grande was established on July 6, 1874. Despite Gallia County being named for its original French settlers,<ref>{{cite web | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=DmxNAQAAMAAJ&q=gallia&pg=PR1 |title = History of Gallia County: Containing a Condensed History of the County; Biographical Sketches; General Statistics; Miscellaneous Matters &c|year = 1882}}</ref> [[Wales|Welsh]] immigrants began to arrive to the area in 1818, and during the 1830s and 1840s, more than 3,000 more arrived from the parishes of [[Pennant, Ceredigion|Pennant]], [[Tregaron]], [[Llangeitho]], Trefilan, [[Llangwyryfon]], and [[Llanddeiniolen]] in [[Ceredigion]] (then known as Cardiganshire). The [[population density]] was {{convert|610.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 292 housing units at an average density of {{convert|214.7|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 8.8% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.2% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.6% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.7% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 2.4% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.3% of the population.

The racial makeup of the village was 90.82% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.04% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.09% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 2.08% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.22% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.75% from two or more races. ==Economy==
The first [[Bob Evans Restaurants|Bob Evans restaurant]] was located in Rio Grande. The [[Bob Evans Restaurants|Bob Evans]] Farm is also located in Rio Grande. The original restaurant was replaced in the early 21st century by a new building. The farm has become a tourist attraction, featuring a picturesque windmill in a vast field, tours, and the annual Bob Evans Farm Festival. This event, held on an October weekend, attracts several thousand visitors.

==Education==
Public education in the village of Rio Grande is provided by the [[Gallipolis City School District]]. Campuses serving the village include Rio Grande Elementary School, Gallia Academy Middle School, and [[Gallia Academy High School]].

The [[University of Rio Grande]] is a private not-for-profit center of tertiary education.
