Richmond was [[plat]]ted in 1856 by Reuben Richardson,<ref name="place name"/> a farmer from [[Sauk Rapids, Minnesota|Sauk Rapids]] who later served in [[Minnesota Legislature]].<ref name="reurich">{{cite web |title=Richardson, Reuben M. The [[pontoon boat]] was invented in Richmond in the 1950s by Ambrose Weeres, who was involved in the milling business, and Edwin Torborg, a farmer who manufactured [[feed mixer]]s.<ref name="125years"/>

When first platted, Richmond was within [[Munson Township, Stearns County, Minnesota|Munson Township]]. The town's nickname, "On the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes", is a nod to a geographical feature of the town. The [[population density]] was {{convert|1380.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 627 housing units at an average density of {{convert|608.7|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 98.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.1% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.6% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.6% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.7% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 1,903 households, of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.8% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age in the city was 39.4 years. 23.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.3% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 17.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

The population density was {{convert|2,421.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,098 housing units at an average density of {{convert|583.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 99.98% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.02% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.00% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.00% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.0% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 483 households, out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,400, and the median income for a family was $44,464. Males had a median income of $29,315 versus $21,219 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $15,995.  About 4.4% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 8.0% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.
