Richfield Springs was called "Big Medicine Waters" by the local natives.

:Richfield was formed from the Town of [[Otsego, New York|Otsego]], [[New York (state)|New York]] on April 10, 1792. The towns of [[Exeter, New York|Exeter]] and [[Plainfield, New York|Plainfield]] were taken off in 1799. It is the extreme northern town of the county. Its surface is rolling and moderately hilly, with a mean elevation of 150 to 200 ft. above [[Canadarago Lake|Schuyler Lake]] (now Canadarago Lake), which lies in the southeast corner of the town and occupies a deep valley, into which flow several small streams from the north and west. The soil is of a diversified character, consisting of gravel, slate, clay, and sandy loam, well cultivated and productive. About 500,000 pounds of cheese are made in the town annually, &mdash; being more than double that made in any other town in the county. ==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|32.5|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|30.9|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|1.6|sqmi|km2}}  (4.92%) is water.

The northern town line is the border of [[Herkimer County, New York|Herkimer County]]. The northern end of [[Canadarago Lake]] is in the eastern part of the town. [[Hyder Creek]] enters the lake from the west. [[Ocquionis Creek]] and [[Mink Creek (Canadarago Lake)|Mink Creek]] flow into the lake from the north, passing through Richfield Springs.

[[New York State Route 28]] (NY&nbsp;28) is a north-south highway passing the western shore of Canadarago Lake. NY&nbsp;28 intersects [[U.S. Route 20 in New York|US Route 20]] at Richfield Springs. [[New York State Route 167|NY&nbsp;167]] has its southern terminus at US Route 20 in the center of Richfield Springs.

The population density was {{convert|78.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,296 housing units at an average density of {{convert|41.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 97.48% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.37% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.41% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.45% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.33% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.04% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.91% from two or more races. There were 968 households, out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,784, and the median income for a family was $41,050. Males had a median income of $29,479 versus $21,518 for females.
