The village's name origin is uncertain 'Edge enclosure' or perhaps, 'Randi's enclosure.'

The 16th-century [[Church of St Helen, Ranworth|Church of St Helen]], known as 'the Cathedral of the Broads',<ref>{{cite book |last=Standford |first=David |year=2007 |title=Norfolk Churches |edition=1st |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ir_AKlgQcWIC |access-date=June 6, 2013 |publisher=[[Frances Lincoln Ltd]] |isbn=978-0711227422 |page=82}}</ref> has a fine [[Ranworth rood screen|15th century painted rood screen]] and a rare [[Ranworth Antiphoner|Antiphoner]].
