The charter was issued that day by Governor Benning Wentworth – issuer of the New Hampshire Grants under the authority of King George II of Great Britain. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 26.8 square miles (69.4 km2), of which 26.76 square miles (69.4 km2) is land and 0.04% is water.
