The population was 1,461 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]]. It is part of the [[Wheeling metropolitan area]].

While "Powhatan" likely memorializes the [[Powhatan|Native-American tribe]] of the same name, the "Point" in the town's name refers to the confluence between the [[Captina Creek]] and the [[Ohio River]]. Powhatan Point is the closest town on the Ohio side of [[Captina Island]] in the Ohio River.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|1083.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 792 housing units at an average density of {{convert|538.8|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the village was 98.7% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.4% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.3% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.1% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.1% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.6% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.3% of the population.

There were 710 households, of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.9% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age in the village was 43.6 years. 21.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.4% were from 25 to 44; 30.6% were from 45 to 64; and 17.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 47.8% male and 52.2% female.

The racial makeup of the village was 98.11% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.57% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.06% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 1.26% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.23% of the population.

In the village, the population was spread out, with 21.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $24,875, and the median income for a family was $32,546. Males had a median income of $32,039 versus $16,583 for females. About 16.7% of families and 19.8% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 27.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.

==Economy==
Although the village's economy was once largely supported by the coal industry, most residents currently seek employment outside village limits in nearby towns and cities such as [[Moundsville, West Virginia|Moundsville]] and [[Wheeling, West Virginia]].

==Education==
Powhatan Point currently has a K–8 elementary school.  After elementary promotion, the majority of students attend [[River High School (Hannibal, Ohio)|River High School]], located in [[Hannibal, Ohio|Hannibal]], a school that also draws students from other small Ohio River villages, such as [[Clarington, Ohio|Clarington]], [[Sardis, Ohio|Sardis]], Hannibal, and [[Cameron, Ohio|Cameron]].
