In the early 20th century, the [[Homestead Acts]] and the [[Shoshone Project]] contributed greatly to agricultural development in the [[Bighorn Basin]]. Mineral extraction and agriculture are still the key industries of Powell, with sugar beets, barley, and pinto beans being the most commonly grown cash crops. Beef production remains an important facet of the Powell economy, as well.
