== History ==

Platte City was founded by Zadock "Zed" Martin and was incorporated as a city in September 1843.

On December 16, 1861, [[W. James Morgan|Colonel W. James Morgan's]] Union Squad [[Burning of Platte City|razed Platte City, including the courthouse.]]

The Platte County Fair held annually just outside Platte City began in 1863 and is the oldest continuously operating fair west of the [[Mississippi River]].

On July 19, 1933 [[Bonnie and Clyde]] were ambushed by, and engaged in, a shootout with local authorities just south of Platte City at the [[Red Crown Tourist Court]].

==Geography==
Platte City is located along the south side of the [[Platte River (Iowa and Missouri)|Platte River]] and the Platte Falls Conservation Area lies to the northeast along the flood plain. [[Interstate 29|I-29]] passes the east side of the city and [[Missouri Route 92]] serves the city. The [[population density]] was {{convert|1299.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 2,214 housing units at an average density of {{convert|613.3|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 88.9% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.6% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.5% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.4% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.2% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.6% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 2.9% from two or more races. The median age in the city was 35.2 years. 24.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 31.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.6% were from 45 to 64; and 11.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.4% male and 49.6% female.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.08% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 3.34% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.49% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.80% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.16% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.12% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.79% of the population.
