At the [[2000 United States Census|2000 census]] there were 459 people, 190 households, and 130 families in the town. The population density was {{convert|429.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 237 housing units at an average density of {{convert|221.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2000 census|racial makeup]] of the town was 43.14% White, 56.43% African American, 0.22% Asian, and 0.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.22%.<ref name="GR2" />

Of the 190 households 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 20.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 30.5% of households were one person and 18.4% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.98.

The age distribution was 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 80.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.4 males.

The median household income was $19,583 and the median family income  was $29,688. Males had a median income of $31,750 versus $16,902 for females. The per capita income for the town was $10,853.
