==History==
Initially settled in 1870, the town's development has been shaped by that of [[Orlando, Florida|Orlando]], approximately {{convert|5|mi|0}} to the north. From just before 1882 the [[South Florida Railroad]] mainline,<ref>An [[:File:1882 FT%26PRR.jpg|1882 map]] of the [[Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad]] shows the Florida Southern Railroad completion south to Kissimmee.</ref> which became part of the [[Plant System]] in 1893 and the [[Atlantic Coast Line Railroad]] in 1902, provided regular rapid passenger and freight service. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the CDP has a total area of 7.3&nbsp;km{{sup|2}} (2.8&nbsp;mi<sup>2</sup>), of which 6.8&nbsp;km{{sup|2}} (2.6&nbsp;mi<sup>2</sup>) is land and 0.5&nbsp;km{{sup|2}} (0.2&nbsp;mi<sup>2</sup>) (7.42%) is water.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 8,803 people, 3,130 households, and 2,228 families residing in the CDP.  The [[population density]] was 1,297.3/km{{sup|2}} (3,364.5/mi<sup>2</sup>).  There were 3,302 housing units at an average density of 486.6/km{{sup|2}} (1,262.0/mi<sup>2</sup>).  The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.78% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 12.80% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.86% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 2.58% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.20% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 10.24% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 4.53% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 35.60% of the population.

There were 3,130 households, out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.9% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.7 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,448, and the median income for a family was $37,969. Males had a median income of $25,908 versus $22,019 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the CDP was $16,767.  About 13.3% of families and 15.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

==Industry==
The name "Pine Castle" has been associated with several industrial projects. In 1925, boat manufacturer [[Correct Craft]] founded its original factory in Pine Castle, before constructing a larger facility in 2006.{{Citation needed|date=September 2012}} In the mid-1940s, [[Bell Aircraft]] Corporation tested its [[Bell X-1|X-1]] supersonic rocket plane at [[McCoy Air Force Base|Pinecastle Army Airfield]], because of the area's then-remote location and {{convert|10000|ft|adj=on}} runway.<ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/history/HistoricAircraft/X-1/background.html| title=Dryden History - Historic Aircraft - X-1 Background| publisher=NASA Dryden Flight Research Center| access-date=September 25, 2012}}</ref> The airfield, located {{convert|2|mi|0}} southeast of Pine Castle, has since become [[Orlando International Airport]].
