==Geography==
Penn Township is located just northeast of the center of Cass County. The village of [[Vandalia, Michigan|Vandalia]] is in the southeast part of the township.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,902 people, 747 households, and 560 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|56.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,280 housing units at an average density of {{convert|38.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 82.07% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 12.36% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.58% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 2.10% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.37% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.52% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 747 households, out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $38,375, and the median income for a family was $43,077. Males had a median income of $32,167 versus $24,769 for females. About 9.9% of families and 13.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.
