The population was 286 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]].

==History==
Pākalā Village is also called "Pākalā Camp", named for the temporary living quarters of plantation workers. Pākalā Camp consisted of employee and retiree housing for workers at the Gay & Robinson [[sugarcane]] [[Sugar plantations in Hawaii|plantation]] in the [[ahupua{{okina}}a]] of [[Makaweli]], the last remaining sugarcane plantation on Kauai.<ref>{{Hawaiian Dictionaries |Makaweli |HASH0b407e4c1017c7274ab477 |dic=hpn |accessdate= October 12, 2010 }}</ref> The plantation was managed by the Robinson family of [[Kauai]] and [[Niihau]], who first arrived in Hawaii in 1863.

==Geography==
Pākalā Village is located on the southwest shore of the island of [[Kauai]] at {{coord|21|56|36|N|159|38|52|W|type:city}} (21.943221, -159.647658).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is bordered to the northwest by [[Waimea, Kauai County, Hawaii|Waimea]] and to the southwest by the Pacific Ocean. The community of Pākalā Village is in the southwest part of the CDP, next to the Pacific. The CDP also includes the community of Kaawanui Village in the northeast. [[Hawaii Route 50]] passes through the middle of the CDP, between the two settlements. The highway leads northwest {{convert|2|mi|0}} into Waimea and southeast {{convert|1.5|mi|1}} to [[Kaumakani, Hawaii|Kaumakani]].

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> of 2000, there were 478 people, 150 households, and 121 families residing in the CDP.  The population density was {{convert|204.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 172 housing units at an average density of {{convert|73.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the CDP was 14% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], <1% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 37% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 26% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], <1% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 22% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 6% of the population.

There were 150 households, out of which 25% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19% were non-families. 18% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 3.19 and the average family size was 3.66.

In the CDP the population was spread out, with 29% under the age of 18, 6% from 18 to 24, 21% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 24% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 115.3 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $24,464, and the median income for a family was $29,000. Males had a median income of $21,875 versus $14,750 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the CDP was $9,846.  About 33% of families and 44% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 69% of those under age 18 and 26% of those age 65 or over.
