== History ==
The town was first settled around 1806. The Town of Orwell was created from part of the [[Richland, New York|Town of Richland]] in 1817. In 1828, Orwell was reduced by the founding of the [[Boylston, New York|Town of Boylston]], but more territory was obtained from Richland in 1844.

The population density was {{convert|31.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 701 housing units at an average density of {{convert|17.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.17% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.88% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.32% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 0.56% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.48% of the population.

There were 419 households, out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 120.0 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 124.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $34,000 versus $21,500 for females. About 16.6% of families and 21.5% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 25.7% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.
