On August 14, 1784, [[Grigory Shelikhov]] with 130 [[promyshlenniki|Russian fur traders]] massacred (see [[Awa'uq Massacre]]) several hundred ''Qik’rtarmiut Sugpiat'' tribe of [[Alutiiq people|Alutiiq]] men, women and children at Refuge Rock, a tiny [[stack (geology)|stack]] island off the eastern coast of [[Sitkalidak Island]]. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.60. In the city, the age distribution of the population showed 39.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 4.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females, there were 127.9 males. For every 100 females of age 18 and over, there were 142.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $32,500, and the median income for a family was $26,000. Males had a median income of $33,750 versus $23,750 for females.
