==History==
[[Andrew Jackson]] used the area around present-day Ohatchee to prepare for the [[Battle of Talladega]]. [[Lyncoya Jackson]] was orphaned by the [[Battle of Tallushatchee]] in November 1813 and later sent to Jackson's [[The Hermitage (Nashville, Tennessee)|Hermitage]] in Tennessee where he was raised. The site of the battle is marked with a large stone marker along Alabama Highway 144 between [[Alexandria, Alabama|Alexandria]] and Ohatchee, near Tallaseehatchee Creek.

Between 1863 and 1864, Alfred A. Janney built a furnace, now named Janney Furnace, to produce [[pig iron]] for the [[Confederate States of America]] during the [[American Civil War|Civil War]].<ref>[http://youareanidiotreborn.org/mwelsh2001/you.html About Janney Furnace<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref> The furnace never went into production, but locals often speak of the quality of the construction because the structure was supposedly built by slaves. The site is now a part of the Calhoun County Park System and features a Civil War memorial alongside a Civil War and Native American museum. The site hosts a town festival every year that includes vendors, children's activities, music, and a Civil War reenactment.

Ohatchee became an incorporated town in 1956. On [[Tornado outbreak sequence of March 24–28, 2021|March 25, 2021]], an [[Tornado outbreak sequence of March 24–28, 2021#Macon–Ohatchee–Wellington–Piedmont, Alabama|EF3 tornado]] struck the town, killing six residents.

The population density was {{convert|198|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 571 housing units at an average density of {{convert|96.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 94.1% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 3.2% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.6% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.0% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], and 2.1% from two or more races. 0.6% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 474 households, out of which 25.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
