The CDP is a part of the Boulder, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area. ==History==
Niwot is named for Arapaho [[Chief Niwot]], a tribal leader in the Boulder area during the nineteenth century.<ref>{{cite book|last=Dawson|first=John Frank|title=Place names in Colorado: why 700 communities were so named, 150 of Spanish or Indian origin|year=1954|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015051116740;view=1up;seq=43|publisher=The J. The town of Niwot was first [[plat]]ted in 1875 along either side of the [[Colorado Central Railroad]].<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Niwot Historical Society: History |url=https://www.niwothistoricalsociety.org/history.html |access-date=2023-01-27 |website=www.niwothistoricalsociety.org}}</ref> Initially, the town's commercial district was to the west of the railroad, while the residential was to the east. By the early 1900s, the bulk of the town shifted to the east side of the track, while the buildings to the west were either relocated or burned down.<ref name=":0" />

Niwot is located along [[Colorado State Highway 119|State Highway 119]], halfway between [[Boulder, Colorado|Boulder]] and [[Longmont, Colorado|Longmont]].

The [[population density]] was 1,076.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 86.2% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.9% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.3% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 4.7% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 3.1% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 4.6% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 5.1% of the population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's [[American Community Survey]] data estimates for 2019, there were 1,541 households, out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, and 28.5% were non-families. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00.

Niwot is served by the [[St. Vrain Valley School District]]. The two schools within the town are Niwot Elementary School and [[Niwot High School]]. Niwot High School serves students from Niwot, in addition to those from southern [[Longmont, Colorado|Longmont]] and [[Gunbarrel, Colorado|Gunbarrel]], while Niwot Elementary school mainly serves students from the immediate community.
