[[Georgia State Route 335]] leads west from Nicholson {{convert|9|mi|0}} to [[Jefferson, Georgia|Jefferson]], the [[county seat]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of {{convert|10.4|km2|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|0.04|sqkm|order=flip|2}}, or 0.43%, are water.<ref name="Census 2010"/> The city is on the crest of a ridge which drains west and east to tributaries of the [[North Oconee River]].
