Although the crossroads community on the Newport River was known by that name decades earlier, the area was also known as Bell's Corner and Shepardsville in earlier years. It was the location of the Newport Barracks, a Union camp during the American Civil War. It was also called Shepardsville, in the early 18th century, for Shepard, a local landowner. The naming of "Newport" can be traced to two prevalent theories: the town was called "New Port" to distinguish it from the "Old Port " of Beaufort, N.C.; and the early influx of Quakers from Rhode Island called the town "Newport" in honor of their native Newport, R.I.. Early industry included agriculture, logging, and naval stores, including turpentine production. During the town's early history, the Newport River was navigable all the way to Old Topsail Inlet, now known as Beaufort Inlet, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean. The town was home to one of the earliest organized churches in Carteret County, the Newport River Primitive Baptist Church, established 1778. The structure was burned near the end of the Civil War but was soon rebuilt on the corner of Haskett Street and New Bern Street and remains active today. In 1858, the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad was completed when the final 96 mi stretch of rail from Goldsboro through Newport to Beaufort was laid. The community is also the site of numerous Civil War battlefields, forts, and strategic locations. Newport was occupied by Union forces for much of the war. Part of the town's residential area known as the "housing project" was originally developed as housing for civil service employees and military serving at nearby Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. ==Newport today== The town government operates as a council–manager government form with a mayor, a town manager, and a five-member town council. Members serve staggered terms. The town is protected by a paid fire department with an active volunteer force, founded in the 1940s by Leon Mann, Jr. The department also provides emergency medical and ambulance services. Public schools in Newport include the Carteret Pre-K Center, Newport Elementary School, and Newport Middle School. Newport Consolidated School, a first-through-12th-grade school established in 1926, was demolished in 1966 after the county completed construction of a new consolidated high school, West Carteret High in nearby Morehead City. Members of the Newport Consolidated School Alumni Association operate a small school museum in a depot warehouse owned by the North Carolina Railroad in Newport. ==Geography== Newport is located in west-central Carteret County. U.S. Route 70, a four-lane highway, passes through the town west of the center; it leads southeast 10 mi to Morehead City and north 7 mi to Havelock. New Bern is 25 mi to the north up US-70. According to the United States Census Bureau, Newport has a total area of 20.0 km2, of which 19.9 km2 is land and 0.2 km2, or 0.85%, is water. ===Climate=== {{Weather box | width = auto | collapsed = | single line = yes | location = Newport, North Carolina (1991–2020 normals, extremes 1996–present) | Jan record high F = 78 | Feb record high F = 81 | Mar record high F = 85 | Apr record high F = 88 | May record high F = 97 | Jun record high F = 100 | Jul record high F = 101 | Aug record high F = 99 | Sep record high F = 94 | Oct record high F = 93 | Nov record high F = 85 | Dec record high F = 80 | year record high F = 101 | Jan high F = 54.3 | Feb high F = 56.8 | Mar high F = 63.1 | Apr high F = 71.0 | May high F = 78.3 | Jun high F = 83.8 | Jul high F = 87.1 | Aug high F = 86.6 | Sep high F = 82.0 | Oct high F = 73.9 | Nov high F = 65.4 | Dec high F = 58.6 | year high F = 71.7 | Jan mean F = 44.0 | Feb mean F = 46.4 | Mar mean F = 52.1 | Apr mean F = 60.3 | May mean F = 68.4 | Jun mean F = 75.5 | Jul mean F = 79.2 | Aug mean F = 78.4 | Sep mean F = 73.6 | Oct mean F = 64.0 | Nov mean F = 54.2 | Dec mean F = 47.6 | year mean F = 62.0 | Jan low F = 33.7 | Feb low F = 35.9 | Mar low F = 41.2 | Apr low F = 49.6 | May low F = 58.6 | Jun low F = 67.2 | Jul low F = 71.2 | Aug low F = 70.1 | Sep low F = 65.2 | Oct low F = 54.2 | Nov low F = 43.0 | Dec low F = 36.0 | year low F = 52.2 | Jan record low F = 8 | Feb record low F = 10 | Mar record low F = 15 | Apr record low F = 24 | May record low F = 37 | Jun record low F = 46 | Jul record low F = 53 | Aug record low F = 54 | Sep record low F = 43 | Oct record low F = 28 | Nov record low F = 20 | Dec record low F = 15 | year record low F = 8 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 4.61 | Feb precipitation inch = 4.14 | Mar precipitation inch = 3.67 | Apr precipitation inch = 3.52 | May precipitation inch = 3.22 | Jun precipitation inch = 5.00 | Jul precipitation inch = 5.97 | Aug precipitation inch = 7.75 | Sep precipitation inch = 9.57 | Oct precipitation inch = 4.44 | Nov precipitation inch = 4.78 | Dec precipitation inch = 3.97 | year precipitation inch = 60.64 | unit precipitation days = 0.01 in | Jan precipitation days = 10.8 | Feb precipitation days = 11.6 | Mar precipitation days = 10.8 | Apr precipitation days = 9.8 | May precipitation days = 9.6 | Jun precipitation days = 11.9 | Jul precipitation days = 11.4 | Aug precipitation days = 14.7 | Sep precipitation days = 12.3 | Oct precipitation days = 8.6 | Nov precipitation days = 10.3 | Dec precipitation days = 11.8 | year precipitation days = 133.6 | source = NOAA<ref name="NOWData">{{cite web |url = https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate?wfo=mhx |title = NOWData -
