The town is southwest of [[Albany, New York|Albany]], [[New York (state)|New York]], the state [[capital (political)|capital]]. New Scotland is centrally located in the county.

==History==
The town was settled around 1660. New Scotland was founded in 1832 from the west part of the town of [[Bethlehem, New York|Bethlehem]].

The racial makeup of the town was 98.17% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.28% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.20% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.50% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.20% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.66% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.87% of the population.

There were 3,341 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.98.
