==History==
First settled in 1835 by John McMinn Stambaugh and named "McMinn Chapel", the area was settled by Granville Stinebaugh, who named it after the [[Nevada Territory]]. Nevada enjoyed some prosperity after becoming a stop on the [[St. Louis Southwestern Railway]], and the town incorporated in 1889.

On May 9, 1927, a half-mile-wide [[Fujita scale|F4]] [[tornado]] ripped through Nevada, leaving 19 dead, 100 injured, and property damage exceeding $650,000.<ref>{{cite book|last=Gazulis|first=Thomas P.|title=Significant Tornadoes 1680-1991: A Chronology and Analysis of Events|year=1993|publisher=Environmental Films|location=St. Johnsbury, Vermont|isbn=1-879362-03-1|pages=809}}</ref> The town had a difficult recovery; citizens voted to unincorporate, and placed the restoration of the community in the hands of the Collin County authorities. However, the growing mechanisation involved in [[agriculture]], along with the [[Great Depression]], caused the town to fall into stagnation. The railroad later removed its tracks from the area.

Recent growth in Collin County during the last 25 years has moderately improved life in Nevada. The population has again reached the heights of 1927.

==Geography==
Nevada is located in southeastern Collin County {{convert|4|mi|0}} east of [[Lavon, Texas|Lavon]] and 4 miles west of [[Josephine, Texas|Josephine]]. It is {{convert|20|mi}} northeast of [[Garland, Texas|Garland]] and {{convert|36|mi}} northeast of downtown [[Dallas]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city of Nevada has a total area of {{convert|6.2|km2|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|0.03|sqkm|order=flip|2}}, or 0.52%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>
