Napakiak first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as the unincorporated Inuit village of "Napahaiagamute."<ref>{{Cite web | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Rr9RAQAAMAAJ&q=Napakiak&pg=PA49 |title = Geological Survey Professional Paper|year = 1949}}</ref> All 98 residents were of the Inuit tribe.<ref>{{cite web |title=Statistics of the Population of Alaska |url=https://www2.census.gov/prod2/decennial/documents/1880a_v1-17.pdf |website=United States Census Bureau |date=1880}}</ref> It next returned in 1900 as the village of "Naparegarak." In 1910, it returned as Napakiak (with the alternative 1880 name of Napahaiagamute). In 1920, it returned as "Napakiakamute." It did not appear on the 1930 census. It next appeared again in 1940 and in every successive census to date as Napakiak. It formally incorporated in 1970.

The population density was {{convert|75.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 101 housing units at an average density of {{convert|21.5|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 1.42% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 1.70% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 96.03% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race. Most of the residents are [[Yup'ik people]]. The sale, importation or possession of alcohol is forbidden in the village.

There were 90 households, out of which 48.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 18.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.1% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.92 and the average family size was 4.52.

In the city, the age distribution of the population shows 38.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females, there were 130.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,750, and the median income for a family was $29,167. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $43,750 for females. About 16.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 20.7% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.
