==History==
Murray was founded in 1868 as Oakland{{Sfn|Savage,|2007|p=158}} following the construction of the [[Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad|Burlington & Missouri River Rail Road]] through the State.{{Sfn|''Clarke County History'', July|1886|p=}} The village was laid out in 1868 by Henry Clay Sigler (1830–1907) of [[Osceola, Iowa|Osceola]] and Smith Henderson Mallory (1835–1903) of [[Chariton, Iowa|Chariton]]. At that time, Oakland occupied a {{convert|120|acre|mi2|4|abbr=off|adj=on}} tract. The first U.S. Post Office in Oakland was established in the Fall of 1868 – In section 10, [[Troy Township, Clarke County, Iowa|Troy Township]]. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|racial]] makeup of the city was 94.2% [[White Americans|White]], 0.4% [[African Americans|Black or African American]], 0.0% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 0.1% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.1% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 2.0% from other races and 3.1% from two or more races.
