Mound Valley was founded in 1869. The racial makeup of the city was 94.26% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 2.15% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.67% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.91% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.91% of the population.

The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.5% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,542, and the median income for a family was $35,481. Males had a median income of $21,488 versus $13,958 for females. About 21.5% of families and 24.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 29.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
