As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 422 people, 172 households, and 108 families residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|340.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 185 housing units at an average density of {{convert|149.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 68.96% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 29.15% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.24% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.47% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.18% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.18% of the population.

There were 172 households, out of which 18.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 18.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 76.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,021, and the median income for a family was $46,875. Males had a median income of $35,417 versus $21,346 for females. Moscow was the site of a skirmish during the [[American Civil War|Civil War]] on December 4, 1863.<ref>Morton, Dorothy Rich. ''Fayette County''. Lee]] attempted to burn the railroad bridge over the [[Wolf River (Tennessee)|Wolf River]], in order to aid Gen. [[Nathan Bedford Forrest]] in returning to Tennessee from [[Mississippi]]. They were thwarted by African-American [[Union Army|Union]] troops who were stationed nearby. Union Gen. [[Stephen A.
