According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of {{convert|0.3|sqmi|km2}}, all land. The downtown area is listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] as the [[Monterey Historic District (Monterey, Kentucky)|Monterey Historic District]].

The racial makeup of the city was 97.60% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.60% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.60% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 1.20% from two or more races.

The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.52.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 35.3% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,094, and the median income for a family was $26,406. Males had a median income of $24,821 versus $25,000 for females.
