==History==
Mitchellville was founded by [[Thomas Mitchell (Iowa politician)|Thomas Mitchell]] (1816–1894) in 1856 and it incorporated as a city on September 30, 1875. Mitchell's farm was later purchased by Polk County, becoming Thomas Mitchell Park.<ref>{{cite book|last=Henning|first=Barbara Beving Long|author2=Patrice K. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|racial]] makeup of the city was 88.4% [[White Americans|White]], 4.8% [[African Americans|Black or African American]], 1.8% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 0.4% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.1% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 1.3% from other races and 3.2% from two or more races.
