He persuaded the [[Detroit and Mackinac Railway]] to establish a station through the area by traveling to [[Tawas City, Michigan|Tawas City]]. As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,043 people, 397 households, and 296 families residing in the township. The population density was {{convert|14.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 666 housing units at an average density of {{convert|9.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the township was 96.64% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 2.30% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.10% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.96% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.86% of the population.

There were 397 households, out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 113.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $31,713, and the median income for a family was $35,417. Males had a median income of $30,375 versus $19,261 for females. About 6.9% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 18.1% of those under age 18 and 12.8% of those age 65 or over.

Mikado Township is served by two public school districts.
