For decades, between [[World War II]] and the 1970s he was the leader of the [[Sardinian Action Party]] (PSd'Az),<ref>{{cite book|last=Day|first=Alan John|title=Political parties of the world|publisher=Cartermill International|year=1988|edition=3rd|pages=[https://archive.org/details/politicalparties3ediunse/page/309 309]|isbn=0582026261|url=https://archive.org/details/politicalparties3ediunse/page/309}}</ref> a [[Sardinian nationalism|Sardinian nationalist]] party calling for detachment from Italy and fiercely contesting the presence of [[NATO]] military bases in Sardinia.
