==History==
The Pend Oreille River was deepened at Box Canyon in 1906, allowing navigation to Metaline.  The Metaline Mine then started producing lead from the Metaline [[formation (geology)|Formation]], a [[Middle Cambrian]] age [[limestone]]. 
By 1951, the mine had produced over 10,000 pounds of [[lead]], and almost 37,000 pounds of [[zinc]]. The racial makeup of the town was 96.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 2.3% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 1.7% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.3% of the population.

There were 86 households, of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 2.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 8.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 48.8% were non-families. 44.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.01 and the average family size was 2.84.

The median age in the town was 50.2 years. 20.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.5% were from 25 to 44; 39.3% were from 45 to 64; and 17.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 53.2% male and 46.8% female.

The [[population density]] was 533.5 people per square mile (208.5/km<sup>2</sup>). There were 91 housing units at an average density of 299.7 per square mile (117.1/km<sup>2</sup>). The racial makeup of the town was 91.98% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.23% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.62% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 6.17% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.23% of the population.

There were 73 households, out of which 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older.
