'''McCrory''' is a city in [[Woodruff County, Arkansas|Woodruff County]], [[Arkansas]], United States. The population was 1,583 at the [[United States Census 2020|2020 census]].

The [[McCrory Commercial Historic District]], the [[McCrory Waterworks]], and the [[Dr. John William Morris Clinic]] are all listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places listings in Woodruff County, Arkansas]].

==History==
The town began to get organized when word spread in 1886 that local land had been donated by one Wade McCrory to the [[St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway]] for their projected route from [[Memphis, Tennessee]] to [[Little Rock, Arkansas|Little Rock]].<ref name= Encyclopedia>{{cite web|url= https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/mccrory-woodruff-county-1018/ |title=McCrory (Woodruff County)|publisher=Encyclopedia of Arkansas|accessdate=September 16, 2024}}</ref>  The first train actually arrived the next year, and the town was formally incorporated on January 30, 1890.<ref name=Encyclopedia/>

Given that another railway called the [[White and Black River Valley Railway#Batesville and Brinkley Railroad|Batesville and Brinkley Railroad]] had in the early 1880’s built two miles west of town, local McCrory businessmen in 1906 tried to leverage their railroad connections by creating a [[Tramway (industrial)|tramway]] running from McCrory directly to the Batesville & Brinkley, at a point originally known as Martin’s Junction, later Jelks, and finally becoming [[Patterson, Arkansas|Patterson]] in 1919.<ref name=Beedeville>{{cite web| url= https://thundertrain.org/JANUARY-1994.PDF |title= The McCrory & Beedeville Southern Railway  |publisher=Arkansas Railroader, January 1994, pp. 11-17|accessdate=September 13, 2024}}</ref>  On May 21, 1910, the owners decided to form a fully-fledged railroad called the McCrory and Beedeville Southern Railway.<ref name=Beedeville/>  The original plan was to run from McCrory north-northeast to the timber processing town of [[Beedeville, Arkansas|Beedeville]], but this was quickly modified to include an extension west from McCrory to Jelks, replacing the tramway.<ref name=Beedeville/><ref>{{cite web|url= https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Patterson,+AR/McCrory,+AR/Beedeville,+AR/@35.3553967,-91.2982656,28928m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m20!4m19!1m5!1m1!1s0x87d380ed6d0287db:0x76ed42a8c85a67f7!2m2!1d-91.2348443!2d35.2561599!1m5!1m1!1s0x87d47f734ce7f18d:0x7022ecb25c09670!2m2!1d-91.1998767!2d35.2574195!1m5!1m1!1s0x87d470e189a56f37:0x2c92881d5eba40ac!2m2!1d-91.1097811!2d35.4290763!3e0?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkxMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D |title=Patterson, Arkansas to Beedeville, Arkansas|publisher=Google Maps|accessdate=September 18, 2024}}</ref>  The line to Jelks was completed around August 1911, along with two miles (to Comers Spur) toward the Beedeville objective.<ref name=Beedeville/>  Financial problems occurred almost immediately, but the line was extended about another 4 miles to around Odessa, Arkansas by November 1912, and about another three-and-a-half miles to a point known as Langley Junction by November 1913.<ref name=Beedeville/>  This gave the railroad a final line of about eleven-and-a-half miles of track from Jelks to Langley Junction, which was still about three-and-a-half miles short of Beedeville.<ref name=Beedeville/>  The railroad went bankrupt and was out of business by 1914, with the rails removed soon after.<ref name=Beedeville/>
