'''McAdoo''' is a [[Borough (Pennsylvania)|borough]] and [[coal town]] in [[Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania|Schuylkill County]], [[Pennsylvania]], United States, {{convert|5|mi|km}} south of [[Hazleton, Pennsylvania|Hazleton]] and seven miles north of [[Tamaqua, Pennsylvania|Tamaqua]]. McAdoo contains the picturesque Silver Brook Meadow. In the past, [[anthracite]] coal mining and a shirt factory, the McAdoo Manufacturing Company, provided gainful employment to the populace. ==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the borough has a total area of {{convert|0.3|sqmi|km2}}, all land. McAdoo's elevation is 1700 feet above sea level. It is on the crest of [[Broad Mountain (Lehigh Valley)|Broad Mountain]] and straddles the divide between the [[Delaware River|Delaware]] and [[Susquehanna River|Susquehanna]] watersheds. [[Pennsylvania Route 309]] (Kennedy Drive) is the main north-to-south thoroughfare. [[Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania|Interstate 81]] runs a short distance west of town and parallel to PA 309. The two routes have an access highway connecting them just south of McAdoo at exit 138 of I-81. McAdoo has a warm-summer [[humid continental climate]] (''Dfb'') and the [[hardiness zone]] is 6a. The population density was {{convert|6,916.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,211 housing units at an average density of {{convert|3,683.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2000 census|racial makeup]] of the borough was 99.47% White, 0.09% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66%.<ref name="GR2" />

The most common ancestries in McAdoo are [[Polish people|Polish]] (15.5%), [[Italians|Italian]] (14.1%), [[Slovaks|Slovak]] (10.6%), [[Irish Americans|Irish]] (7.8%), and [[Greeks|Greek]] (5.0%)

Of the 1,034 households, 23.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 37.1% of households were one person, and 20.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the borough the population was spread out, with 20.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% 65 or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.

The median household income was $25,721 and the median family income was $31,625. Males had a median income of $28,281 versus $21,096 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,723. About 9.1% of families and 14.5% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 24.7% of those under age 18 and 12.6% of those age 65 or over.
