It was named for John W. Martin, Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929. |50.9|73.4|2.4 |53.4|75.4|2.6 |56.9|78|3.9 |60.5|81.7|2.9 |66.5|85.8|3.5 |71.3|89.1|6.9 |72.8|90.5|6.3 |73.1|90.5|7.3 |72.3|88.9|7.1 |67.3|85|5.0 |60.2|79.8|3.1 |54.5|74.9|2.4 |units = imperial |float = right |clear = both }}According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 753 sqmi, of which 543 sqmi is land and (27.8%) is water. It is the fifty-fourth largest county in Florida by land area, and fifty-third largest by total area. ===Adjacent counties=== * St. Lucie County β north * Palm Beach County β south * Hendry County β southwest * Glades County β southwest * Okeechobee County β northwest ===National protected area=== * Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge ==Environment== ===Martin County Shore Protection Project=== According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Martin County Shore Protection Project includes nourishment of approximately 3.75 miles of beach extending from the St. Lucie County line south to the Stuart Public Beach Park in Martin County.
