==History==
In 1887, the Chicago, Santa Fe, and California Railway, began construction on a rail line between [[Chicago]] and [[Kansas City, Kansas]]. It ran through southeast Linn County, prompting new towns such as Marceline. The completed line was absorbed into the [[Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway|Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway]]. The first land parcel in what became the town was sold in January 1888, and the town was incorporated two months later. There were 1,151 housing units at an average density of {{convert|350.9|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2010 census|racial makeup]] of the city was 98.0% White, 0.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Of the 1,079 households 31.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 32.4% of households were one person and 17.6% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.95.

The age distribution was 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% 65 or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.

The median household income was $25,164 and the median family income was $35,948. Males had a median income of $26,786 versus $17,382 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,086. About 9.0% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 15.3% of those under age 18 and 19.5% of those age 65 or over.
