The city borders the adjacent [[Manistique Township, Michigan|Manistique Township]], but the two are administered independently.  The city lies on the north shore of [[Lake Michigan]] at the mouth of the [[Manistique River]], which forms a natural harbor that has been improved with [[Breakwater (structure)|breakwater]]s, [[dredging]], and the [[Manistique East Breakwater Light]]. == Nickname ==
Manistique is nicknamed "The Emerald City." It is believed to be named for the emerald green waters of the nearby [[Kitch-iti-kipi]] spring, the largest spring in the state of Michigan. The Manistique Area Schools athletic teams are referred to as the "Emeralds." Several local businesses include "Emerald City" in their names.

The racial makeup of the city was 81.9% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.2% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 9.7% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.5% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.1% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 3.9% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.0% of the population.
