[[Florida State Road 2]] runs through the center of town as 8th Avenue, leading east {{convert|9|mi|0}} to the [[Georgia (U.S. state)|Georgia]] border at the [[Chattahoochee River]], and west {{convert|15|mi}} to [[Campbellton, Florida|Campbellton]]. [[Florida State Road 71|State Road 71]] passes through Malone as 10th Street, crossing FL-SR 2 in the center of town. FL-SR 71 leads north {{convert|4|mi|0}} to the [[Alabama]] border and south {{convert|15|mi}} to [[Marianna, Florida|Marianna]], the Jackson County seat.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 2,009 people, 311 households, and 199 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|641.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 377 housing units at an average density of {{convert|120.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 50.77% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 43.50% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.85% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.10% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.64% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 3.14% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 7.13% of the population.

In 2000, there were 311 households, out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 19.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. (The reason for the extraordinarily high ratio of males to females is due to the presence of an all-male state prison within the city limits.)

In 2000, the median income for a household in the town was $28,611, and the median income for a family was $38,281. Males had a median income of $31,979 versus $19,345 for females. Malone public schools are served by the [[Jackson County School Board]].

Malone School houses grades [[K–12]] with approximately 600 students. Malone School earned an "A" on the last [[Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test|FCAT]] scores.

Malone High School boys basketball program has won 14 state championships. The girls basketball program has won 1 state championship.
