The south branch of the [[River Raisin]] flows through the township.  The [[Lenawee County Airport]] is located in the northern portion of the township near the city of [[Adrian, Michigan|Adrian]].

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 8,200 people, 2,191 households, and 1,676 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|267.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 2,399 housing units at an average density of {{convert|78.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 81.63% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 13.05% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.27% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.35% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 3.33% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.37% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 7.35% of the population.

There were 2,191 households, out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the township the population was spread out, with 20.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 38.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 165.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 185.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $47,114, and the median income for a family was $52,642. Males had a median income of $33,941 versus $23,103 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $17,749.  About 1.0% of families and 2.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.

Madison Township is served by three separate public school districts.  The northeast portion of the township is served by [[Madison School District (Michigan)|Madison School District]].
