The racial makeup of the city was 99.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.1% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.1% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.3% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.5% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.6% of the population.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.09% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.13% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.78% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.65% of the population.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.1% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 18.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 35.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 51 years. For every 100 females, there were 82.4 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,228, and the median income for a family was $35,227. Males had a median income of $25,625 versus $16,442 for females. About 8.5% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 18.6% of those under age 18 and 10.6% of those age 65 or over.

==Education==
[[Mabel-Canton Public Schools]] operates area public schools.

The school colors of the pre-merger Mabel School were purple and white. The first graduating class at the Mabel School did so in 1903.
