Soon after (the same year), the northern district (population: 498) was separated to become the new Maasøe Municipality, named after the village on the island of Måsøya where the local Måsøy Church is located. The spelling was later changed to Måsøy. On 1 January 1963, a small area of southern Måsøy, north of Kokelv, (population: 34) was transferred to the neighboring Kvalsund Municipality. On 1 January 1984, the western part of the island of Magerøya (population: 240) was transferred from Måsøy to the neighboring Nordkapp Municipality. On 1 January 2020, the municipality became part of the newly formed Troms og Finnmark county. This means the arms have a red field (background) and the charge is a fishing gaff. The gaff has a tincture of Or which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. A gaff is a stick with a metal hook or a barbed spear (historically it was made of bone). It is used for pulling large fish onto a boat. The main islands include Måsøya, Hjelmsøya, Havøya, Ingøya, and Rolvsøya. Most people live in the village of Havøysund, but there are also small hamlets spread around the islands and in the fjord areas, notably Snefjord, Slåtten, Ingøy, Gunnarnes, and Måsøy. The large lake Havvatnet lies in the southern part of the municipality. The highest point in the municipality is the 633.7 m tall mountain Gárdevárri. ===Birdlife=== Lying in the northwest part of the county, Måsøy has a selection of habitats and a varied birdlife. Once again, some of the county's largest seabird colonies can be found in the municipality with the island of Hjelmsøya being one of the more interesting. White-tailed eagles can be seen as well as both Arctic skuas and great skuas. ===Climate=== Måsøy has a subpolar oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfc), due to the relatively mild winter, but also due to the precipitation pattern with drier summer and wetter winter, which is opposite of the subarctic climate. Fruholmen was earlier a tundra climate, and is close to tundra with 1991-2020 normals. As the weather station is located at an exposed lighthouse, the inhabited areas of the municipality such as Havøysund will be slightly warmer in summer and slightly colder in winter than Fruholmen. {{Weather box |metric first= yes |single line = yes |width = auto |location = Fruholmen lighthouse 1991-2020 (13 m), extremes 1980-present |Jan high C = 0.9 |Feb high C = 0.5 |Mar high C = 1.2 |Apr high C = 3 |May high C = 6.2 |Jun high C = 8.9 |Jul high C = 12.2 |Aug high C = 12.1 |Sep high C = 10 |Oct high C = 6 |Nov high C = 3.7 |Dec high C = 2.2 <!-- Mean daily temperature --> |Jan mean C=-1.1 |Feb mean C=-1.6 |Mar mean C=-0.7 |Apr mean C=1.3 |May mean C=4.3 |Jun mean C=6.9 |Jul mean C=9.8 |Aug mean C=10.1 |Sep mean C=8.2 |Oct mean C=4.4 |Nov mean C=1.8 |Dec mean C=0.3 |year mean C= |Jan low C = -3.1 |Feb low C = -3.5 |Mar low C = -2.5 |Apr low C = -0.3 |May low C = 2.6 |Jun low C = 5.4 |Jul low C = 8.2 |Aug low C = 8.5 |Sep low C = 6.7 |Oct low C = 2.8 |Nov low C = 0.1 |Dec low C = -1.6 |Jan record high C = 8.4 |Feb record high C = 9.6 |Mar record high C = 12 |Apr record high C = 13.4 |May record high C = 20.8 |Jun record high C = 24.8 |Jul record high C = 28.6 |Aug record high C = 25.5 |Sep record high C = 22.2 |Oct record high C = 17.3 |Nov record high C = 11.2 |Dec record high C = 12.1 |year record high C = 28.6 |Jan record low C = -20.7 |Feb record low C = -16.7 |Mar record low C = -14.0 |Apr record low C = -12.9 |May record low C = -12.0 |Jun record low C = -1.0 |Jul record low C = 0.8 |Aug record low C = 1.0 |Sep record low C = -1.1 |Oct record low C = -4.5 |Nov record low C = -9.5 |Dec record low C = -12.3 |year record low C= -20.7 <!-- Total precipitation, this should include rain and snow. --> |precipitation colour=green <!-- Enter "green" for green precipitation colours, remove this line for blue colouring. --> |Jan precipitation mm=100 |Feb precipitation mm=89 |Mar precipitation mm=86 |Apr precipitation mm=61 |May precipitation mm=48 |Jun precipitation mm=40 |Jul precipitation mm=50 |Aug precipitation mm=55 |Sep precipitation mm=72 |Oct precipitation mm=93 |Nov precipitation mm=81 |Dec precipitation mm=98 |year precipitation mm= <!-- Mandatory fields, source --> |source 1= Norwegian Meteorological Institute |source 2 = infoclimat.fr }} {{Weather box |collapsed=yes |metric first= yes |single line = yes |width = auto |location = Ingøya 1961-1990 <!-- mean daily temperatures --> |Jan mean C=-2.4 |Feb mean C=-2.4 |Mar mean C=-1.5 |Apr mean C=0.4 |May mean C=3.6 |Jun mean C=6.7 |Jul mean C=9.7 |Aug mean C=9.7 |Sep mean C=7.2 |Oct mean C=3.6 |Nov mean C=0.6 |Dec mean C=-1.4 |year mean C=2.8 <!-- Avg high temperature --> |Jan high C=-0.4 |Feb high C=-0.4 |Mar high C=0.2 |Apr high C=1.9 |May high C=5.3 |Jun high C=8.9 |Jul high C=12.0 |Aug high C=11.7 |Sep high C=8.8 |Oct high C=5.2 |Nov high C=2.3 |Dec high C=0.5 |year high C=4.7 <!-- Average low temperatures --> |Jan low C=-4.4 |Feb low C=-4.4 |Mar low C=-3.2 |Apr low C=-1.3 |May low C=1.9 |Jun low C=5.0 |Jul low C=7.9 |Aug low C=8.1 |Sep low C=5.7 |Oct low C=2.1 |Nov low C=-1.1 |Dec low C=-3.3 |year low C=1.1 <!-- Total precipitation, this should include rain and snow. --> |precipitation colour= <!-- Enter "green" for green precipitation colours, remove this line for blue colouring. --> |Jan precipitation mm=88 |Feb precipitation mm=74 |Mar precipitation mm=70 |Apr precipitation mm=61 |May precipitation mm=44 |Jun precipitation mm=46 |Jul precipitation mm=49 |Aug precipitation mm=52 |Sep precipitation mm=64 |Oct precipitation mm=89 |Nov precipitation mm=91 |Dec precipitation mm=102 |year precipitation mm=830 <!-- Average number of precipitation days --> |unit precipitation days= 1 mm<!-- If entering the average number of days, then the unit requirement should be used, because this varies between countries.
