The town is named after the [[France|French]] city of [[Lyon]], [[Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes]].

Lyon is located in east-central Coahoma County.  It is bordered to the west and south by the city of [[Clarksdale, Mississippi|Clarksdale]], the [[county seat]].

The racial makeup of the town was 74.40% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 25.12% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]] and 0.48% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]].

There were 170 households, out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
