==History ==
In 1789, Eleazer Lindsley, who was originally from [[Morristown, New Jersey]], had been invited to participate in the [[Treaty of Canandaigua]], in which he bought a plot of land. After serving in the [[New Jersey General Assembly|New Jersey State Assembly]],  Lindsley along with 37 aquatencies left [[New Jersey]] to build a settlement in this newly purchased land.<ref>https://lindleypreshohistoricalsociety.blogspot.com/2016/06/our-town-lindleyny.html</ref> Originally, the town had been known as ''Lindsley'' or ''Lindleytown'', but in later years the "s" was dropped and the town is now known as Lindley.

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|37.9|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|37.5|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.3|sqmi|km2}}  (0.90%) is water.

The south town line is the border of [[Tioga County, Pennsylvania|Tioga County]], [[Pennsylvania]]. [[Interstate 99]]/[[U.S. Route 15 in New York|U.S. Route 15]] and the [[Tioga River (Chemung River)|Tioga River]] pass in a north–south direction through the town.

The population density was {{convert|50.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 763 housing units at an average density of {{convert|20.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.22% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.31% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.16% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.16% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.94% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.68% of the population.

There were 697 households, out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,443, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,037 versus $24,750 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $15,625.  About 13.5% of families and 15.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 26.8% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
