The land was first settled ''circa'' 1796. Lincklaen was formed from the town of [[German, New York|German]] in 1823. Parts of the town were removed to form the town of [[Pitcher, New York|Pitcher]] in 1827 and 1833.

The 1865 population was 988.

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|68.05|km2|disp=flip}}, of which {{convert|68.02|sqkm|disp=flip}} is land and {{convert|0.03|sqkm|disp=flip|2}}, or 0.04%, is water.<ref name="Census 2020" />

The northern town line is the border of [[Madison County, New York|Madison County]], and the western town line is the border of [[Cortland County, New York|Cortland County]].

Mud Creek is an important stream flowing southward through the town. Via the [[Otselic River|Otselic]], then the [[Tioughnioga River|Tioughnioga]], then the [[Chenango River]], it is part of the watershed of the [[Susquehanna River]] flowing to [[Chesapeake Bay]].

The population density was {{convert|15.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 228 housing units at an average density of {{convert|9.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 89.5% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.55% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 2.76% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 6.9% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.76% of the population.

Out of the 145 occupied housing units, 15.19% were children under the age of 18, 60.0% were [[Marriage|married couples]] or living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no spouse present, and 17.7% were male households with no spouse present. The average household size was 2.45.
