The population density was {{convert|879.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 139 housing units at an average density of {{convert|369.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 71.90% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 26.28% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.60% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], and 1.21% from two or more races.

There were 132 households, out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 17.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out, with 26.6% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.1 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,446, and the median income for a family was $31,339. Males had a median income of $27,361 versus $20,417 for females. About 13.3% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 19.5% of those under age 18 and 31.4% of those age 65 or over.

The [[Barton–Lexa School District]] provides early childhood, elementary and secondary education to more than 800 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 at is two schools. Students complete their studies at [[Barton High School]].
