The city occupies an entirely rural area, and businesses and services include a grocery store a gas station-garage, restaurants and bars, a bank, a post office, a hotel, several small businesses (including farming supplies and equipment) and shops, grain elevators, local police and fire departments, and the county's public schools. The city is administered by a [[mayor-council]] form of government.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|634.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 258 housing units at an average density of {{convert|358.3|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 96.3% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.2% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.2% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.2% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 3.1% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.0% of the population.

There were 234 households, out of which 18.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 3.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.3% were non-families. 40.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.97 and the average family size was 2.64.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 18.6% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 31.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.
