Leander was established in 1882 on land sold by the [[Austin and Northwestern Railroad|Austin and Northwestern Railroad Co.]] to prospective citizens.<ref name="williamson-county-historical-commission.org">{{cite web|url=http://wilcohistory.org/listing/town-leander/|title=Leander Texas history and historical marker-- Williamson County|website=wilcohistory.org|access-date=June 13, 2022}}</ref> The town was named in honor of Leander "Catfish" Brown, one of the railroad officials responsible for the completion of the line.<ref name="williamson-county-historical-commission.org"/><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.leandertx.gov/community/page/history-city-leander|title=The History of the City of Leander|work=LeanderTx.gov|access-date=January 30, 2017}}</ref>

Tumlinson Fort, the first white settlement in Williamson County, was established in early January 1836 at the headwaters of [[Brushy Creek (San Gabriel River tributary)|Brushy Creek]], four miles south of present-day Leander. About 51.7% of households had children under 18 living with them, 65.5% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were not families.
