As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,160 people, 475 households, and 317 families residing in the town. The [[population density]] was 33.8 people per square mile (13.1/km<sup>2</sup>). There were 1,052 housing units at an average density of 30.7 per square mile (11.8/km<sup>2</sup>). The racial makeup of the town was 93.97% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.40% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.78% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.26% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.09% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.52% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.69% of the population.

There were 475 households, out of which 21.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.60.
