The town is in the northwestern part of Albany County and is west of [[Albany, New York|Albany]], the state [[Capital (political)|capital]].

== History ==
The Town of Knox was established in 1822 from part of the [[Berne, New York|Town of Berne]].  During the [[American Revolutionary War|American Revolution]], loyalties of the inhabitants were split, but the issue was resolved when [[Loyalist (American Revolution)|Tories]] moved away.

The [[Knox District School No. 5]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 2005.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|2009a}}</ref>

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|41.9|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|41.8|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}  (0.33%) is water.

The western town line is the border of [[Schoharie County, New York|Schoharie County]], and the northern town boundary is the border of [[Schenectady County, New York|Schenectady County]].

The population density was {{convert|63.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,041 housing units at an average density of {{convert|24.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.43% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.76% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.19% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.49% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.08% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.98% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.30% of the population.

There were 953 households, out of which 39.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.8% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.5 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $55,658, and the median income for a family was $63,697. Males had a median income of $39,112 versus $30,054 for females. About 3.8% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 6.6% of those under age 18 and 11.0% of those age 65 or over.
