Knollwood is located in north-central Grayson County and is bordered to the south by the city of Sherman, the [[county seat]].

At the 2000 [[census]],<ref name="GR2" /> 375 people, 143 households, and 91 families were residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|1,196.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The 150 housing units averaged 478.6/sq&nbsp;mi (186.8/km{{sup|2}}). The [[Race (United States Census)|racial makeup]] of the city was 87.73% White, 5.87% African American, 0.53% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.53% Pacific Islander, 3.20% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.13% of the population.

Of the 143 households, 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.8% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were not families. About 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.25.

The city's population was distributed as 31.5% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 36.0% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 3.7% who were 65&nbsp;years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100&nbsp;females, there were 94.3&nbsp;males. For every 100&nbsp;females age&nbsp;18 and over, there were 81.0&nbsp;males.
